Read photos with Gemma
Review a photo on your device, then send the reading to your household’s assistant.
Download once, read on your device
On-device vision is available in Account settings. Download Gemma 4 E4B, then choose Read picture on this device in a thread. The model reads the image without uploading it.
The download is about 3.66 GB. It pauses when the connection is interrupted and resumes when you try again. Ridgeback checks the completed file before using it. You can remove it in settings.
Check the reading
For a receipt, review the merchant, date, currency, total and items. Correct anything it got wrong. Using the draft adds it to your message; Send passes the reviewed data to the household’s configured assistant.
The local model does not add events, change lists or save purchases by itself. Your household’s assistant handles those requests after you send them.
Choose when to send a photo
If local reading is unavailable, or you want another reading, you can send the photo for hosted reading. A household using its own provider sends it there; otherwise Ridgeback uses its hosted photo model. Ridgeback asks before doing so. Your household’s fallback setting still applies, and corrections you made remain in the draft.
Device support
Local vision requires a supported iPhone, Android device or Mac with enough memory and storage. Devices that cannot load it can use the explicit hosted-reading option when their household permissions allow it. Desktop local vision is available on supported Macs only; Linux uses hosted reading in this release.
Model readings can be wrong. Review amounts and dates before sending. The initial runtime checks used a synthetic receipt; this is not a claim of accuracy across real receipts or devices.
