The lists have their things in them

Opening the grocery list used to show you how many things were on it and none of what they were. You can read the list now, add to it, tick things off, un-tick them and clear the whole thing.

What was wrong

A count, and a sentence explaining the absence

The list screen could say "four open" and could not say what the four were. It told you so plainly rather than inventing six plausible groceries, which was the right call at the time and a poor substitute for a list.

The rows are read now, from the household the list belongs to.

Ticking things

A tick you can take back

Tapping anywhere on a row ticks it, because a small box beside a long line is a hard thing to hit while holding a shopping basket.

Ticked things stay on the screen, below the rest, rather than disappearing. Somebody has to be able to un-tick a mistake, and a row that vanishes when you touch it is a row you cannot put back. Clearing the list is a separate, quieter control, because that is the one that does not undo.

An empty list

The one you most need to find

A list with nothing on it is exactly the list you are about to start using, and it was the hardest one to reach: the combined view across several houses only shows lists with something open on them, so an empty grocery list was invisible.

Pick a single household and you see every list it keeps, empty ones included. Several houses in view still shows what is open, and says that is what it is showing.

Whose list it is

Read here, changed there

A list another household has shared with you is readable and not changeable, however much your own seat allows — it belongs to them. The screen says whose it is instead of offering buttons that would be refused.

The same goes the other way. A household can let somebody read its lists without letting them change them, which is the case a house thinks about when somebody is minding the children for an evening. That seat sees the list and no controls, rather than controls that fail when pressed.

Not built

You cannot edit the words of something already on a list. Remove it and add it again. Quantities and notes are carried and shown, and there is nowhere in the app to type them yet.
